What is a neuromodulator?
A neuromodulator is an injectable treatment that contains trace amounts of the botulinum toxin, which reduces the appearance of some types of facial lines by relaxing the facial muscles that form them. Some of these formulations have been used for decades for both cosmetic and medical purposes, such as treating migraines, excessive sweating and uncontrollable eye twitching.

What do they treat?
Neuromodulators reduce the appearance of very specific types of facial wrinkles:

  • Horizontal lines across the forehead
  • Vertical lines between the eyebrows (frown lines)
  • Fine lines in the outer corners of the eyes (crow’s feet)

These injections can also be used off-label to treat other facial lines. At New Visage, we can advise you on whether a neuromodulator or another injectable treatment might meet your needs best.

Options in Neuromodulators
New Visage offers the following choices in neuromodulators:

Botox was approved by the FDA in 2002 for the treatment of frown lines. In 2013, the agency extended Botox approval for temporary treatment of crow’s feet. The solution is also used off label to treat other types of wrinkles, according to the discretion of the plastic surgeon administering the treatment.

XeominXeomin
In 2010, Xeomin was approved by the FDA for treatment of two medical conditions, cervical dystonia and blepharospasm. One year later, the formula was also approved for the treatment of frown lines. Like Botox the product is also frequently used off label to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and forehead lines.

Jeuveau®Jeuveau®
Jeuveau® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used in adults for a short period of time (temporary) to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). When injected, Jeuveau® temporarily prevents your nerves from telling your facial muscles to flex. The result? In clinical trials, Jeuveau® was shown to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines.

What is the procedure like?
Neuromodulator injections usually take just a few minutes to complete and do not require much prep time prior to the procedure. Injections are strategically placed into facial muscles, using a very fine needle that causes little discomfort. Once the procedure is over, you can return to your regular activities right away. Some patients do experience mild swelling at the injection sites, which will subside in the hours following the procedure.

What kind of results can I expect?
The results of neuromodulator injections can be seen right away and will continue to improve in the days following the procedure. Your skin will be visibly smoother and lines around the eyes and forehead will be significantly reduced. Results of these injections typically last 3-4 months before a touch-up treatment is required. Some patients that have regular injections may find they can spread their treatments out over a slightly longer period in time.

Neuromodulators continue to be one of the most popular cosmetic treatments performed today, due the quickness and ease of the procedure and the consistent results they offer. To find out if this anti-aging treatment is the right choice for you, contact New Visage at 252-808-2NEW.
